The social and political context of the garment industry of the country has come up in the book “আলো আঁধারের হাতছানি: বিশ্বায়নের ঘোরপ্যাঁচে বাংলাদেশের তৈরি পোশাকশিল্প “written by Professor Shahidur Rahman of BRAC University. This was said by the discussants at the launching of the book published by the University Press Limited (UPL) at 4:30 pm on Saturday, November 13.
During the discussion, CPD Research Director Khandaker Golam Moazzem said that a very common narrative seen in Bangladesh is that the country's garment sector is doing very well. Women workers are doing very well. If that were the case, then the title of this book would be the flash of light, not the shadow of light and darkness. The author did not go into the popular narrative and came out of the conventional frame and see the matter. Mahin Sultan, Head of the Department of Gender and Social Transformation, BIGD said that the book contains interviews, case studies and life stories of different people instead of conventional economics. Debashish Kumar Saha, Chief executive of Esquire Knit Composite Ltd. Also commented on the book saying connection between education and industry is essential. Kalpana Akhter, Executive Director of the Bangladesh Center for Workers Solidarity, thanked UPL for publishing a book in Bangla on the subject. According to Taslima Akhter, a photographer and activist for women's rights, the more writings and publications on this subject, the more opportunities will be created for young people, middle class people to know and communicate.
Mahrukh Mohiuddin, Managing Director of UPL, thanked and congratulated the author for writing a book on the garment industry. The author of the book, Professor of the Department of Economics and Social Sciences at BRAC University also shared his views on the book. The program was conducted by AKM Riazuddin.
