A five-member Bangladesh team, which includes a student of BRAC University, has secured 10th position in a 29th International Mathematical Competition 2022. Atonu Roy Chowdhury, in his second year at the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at BRAC University, individually scored 48 points, which helped his team reach a score of 197.8. Under individual assessments, Atonu and three of his team members won a “first prize” while the remaining member won a “second prize”.
This year’s competition was organized by University College London and hosted by the American University in Bulgaria from 1 – 7 August, 2022. Around 700 university students, aged not more than 23 years, from some 50 countries formed 100 teams to take part in the competition in online and offline platforms. The core contest was held on 3 and 4 August, 2022. On each day, there were four problems meant to be solved in 4 hours. The problems were from the fields of algebra, analysis (real and complex), geometry and combinatorics. The working language was English.
Md Shariful Islam, an assistant professor at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Dhaka, was the coach of the team while Prof Dr Md Shahidul Islam, president of Bangladesh Mathematical Society and chairman of the department, the coordinator.
