“BRAC Museum of Development,” a third-year level design studio at the Department of Architecture, BRAC University. These students have endeavored to showcase BRAC’s history of development, poverty alleviation and social advancement initiatives, and global approach to development.
BRAC, a large-scale non-governmental development organization, was established in 1972 by its founding executive director Sir Fazle Hasan Abed in the Habiganj district in Sylhet. The organization has been acting “as a catalyst, creating opportunities for people living in poverty to realize their potential.” BRAC’s inclusive method has contributed significantly to socioeconomic development in Bangladesh.
The question of development has become a key driver of our times. Yet, how do we continue to engage with and challenge the very idea of development?
In this context, the third-year students focused on designing a museum which portrays the works and achievements of BRAC, while also confronts the ever-changing notion of development itself. The goal was to provide an architectural setting that could both visualize the development narrative in Bangladesh from the global vantage point and offer a rich interpretation of what development could mean in the context of our times. The students have tried to understand BRAC’s development philosophy in Bangladesh and beyond.
By imagining and designing BRAC Museum of Development, we attempted to make "development" a greater public discourse. We tried to engage students in assuming a greater responsibility toward society.
