Biotechnology Program at the Department of Mathematics and Natural Science, Brac University welcomed the freshers of Summer 2023 through an orientation program on June 10, 2023, at the UB2 Auditorium in BRAC University. Around 100 biotech freshers and the faculty members from the Biotechnology Program and MNS department took part in this energizing program.
The program began with a formal speech by Dr. Munima Haque, the Program Director and the Associate Professor of the Biotechnology program, who provided an overview of the significance and the opportunities of the Biotechnology Program at BRAC University. Afterward, the respected Dean, School of Data and Sciences, Prof. Dr. Mahbubul Alam Majumdar, offered a practical viewpoint on biotechnology in the context of Bangladesh. His motivational speech urged the students to unleash their capabilities. Additionally, an introductory video about BRAC University and the Biotechnology Program further motivated the students.
The event's main attraction was an engaging presentation by Dr. Mst. Noorjahan Begum, Assistant Scientist, Enteric and Respiratory Infections, Infectious Diseases Division at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDRB). Dr. Begum shared her personal experiences and her journey in research. Her contributions in COVID-19 preparedness during the pandemic in Bangladesh inspired the students.
Furthermore, the program included a speech from an alumnus, Syed Akib Hossain, who reminisced about his time in the program and emphasized the potential and opportunities in the field of biotechnology. Additionally, a fresher of the Summer 2023 intake expressed her excitement and motivation about studying Biotechnology at BRAC University with her aspirations for the future in a speech.
Dr. Aparna Islam, professor of the Biotechnology program, offered a warm welcome to the new students at BRAC University and emphasized that the freshers should be aspiring to leave their own mark in the world.
The closing remarks were given by Dr. A F M Yusuf Haider, Chairperson of the MNS Department. He greeted the students affectionately and motivated them to seize the opportunities of their academic journey at the university by putting in hard work and determination. He also assured them of the availability of support whenever needed.
The next session was followed by a cultural event where the Biotechnology students showcased their talents through a spirited and vibrant series of performances.
