Dr Shahidur Rahman, Associate Professor of Sociology, was invited to be a panel member at an International conference on “Transformation, Challenges and Opportunities for Bangladesh Garments Industry” on 5th and 6th of June at Harvard University. The two days event was organized jointly by Harvard University South Asia Institute and Harvard University Center for the Environment and International Sustainable Development Institute Inc. The conference provided a forum on active discussion on the garment sector and reviewed the progress so far after the Rana plaza tragedy. The other participants included the state Minister of Bangladesh for Women’s Affair, Minister of Labour, US Department of Labour, academics from Harvard and UC Berkley, leading members of BGMEA and BKMEA, international brands and retailers, ALLIANCE, ACCORD, United Nations agencies, international financial institutes. In his speech, Dr Shahidur emphasized on gender inequality in the garment sector and women’s participation in trade union.
Dr Shahidur Rahman has joined as Additional Director of Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) at BRAC University. On 27th of June he attended a workshop on “Implementation plan of Quality Assurance Unit and IQAC” organized by the World Bank and University Grants Commission.
