“The more anger you hold in your heart towards the past, the less capable you are of loving the present.” From the quotation we can understand why it is important to know about our anger and the ways to manage it. Anger is an emotion which conveys the message that the situation is upsetting, or unjust or threatening. But it is becoming unhealthy when it flares up all the time or spirals out of control. Sometimes people suppress their anger which also later has impact on their mind and body.
Therefore, the Counseling Unit of BRAC University started a Group counseling sessions on “Anger Management” at Residential Campus. Group counseling is a continuous process where a small group of people meet regularly to discuss, interact, and explore problems with each other. In this group counseling session’s participants helped each other to explore the anger and the reason behind it. Moreover, how they perceive the anger and ways to manage it, were discussed in the sessions. Some techniques were shared in the sessions to deal with anger like positive self talk how to take time and mini relaxation which helped the participants to be more relaxed in time of anger. In addition, techniques from Transactional Analysis, Psychodrama was used in the session to explore the self.
The session was held on three consecutive weeks on January 29, February 05 and February 13, and one follow up session on March 05, 2018. There were two groups consists of 15 members in each group and facilitated by Ms. Anne Anthonia Baroi, Ms. Kazi Rumana Haque, Ms. Tasnuva Huque and Ms. Ayesha Seddiqua.
The participants showed their satisfaction and said that it was the place where they can share their feelings. They also showed their contentment to the facilitator and group members, and they are happy to make the connection with each other. The area of improvement was to extend the time limit. Lastly, they ended up by saying that it was the place where they feel relaxed and want such type of session in the future.
