The three day conference on Governance in Education: Transparency, Accountability and Effectiveness was organized on March 2-4, 2008 by UNESCO in cooperation with the Ministries of Education and Primary and Mass Education with assistance from Institute of Educational Development, BRAC University.
The conference was addressed and inaugurated by Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed, Chief Adviser of the Care-taker Government, at the International Conference Centre, Shapla Hall, at the Chief Adviser's Office. Dr. Manzoor Ahmed, Director, Institute of Educational Development, BRAC University and Anir Chowdhury, Policy Adviser, Access to Information Programme, Chief Adviser's Office presented the theme papers. Ms. Rasheda K. Chowdhury, Adviser for Primary and Mass Education and Mr. Malama Meleisea, Director, UNESCO, Bangladesh also spoke at the inaugural programme, which was chaired by Mr. Md. Momtajul Islam Secretary, Ministry of Education.
Over 80 participants from the central and field levels in primary and secondary education, academics, and representatives of NGOs and other stakeholders participated in the working sessions on 2-3 March, 2008. A ten-point Framework for Action for better outcomes in education was presented by Dr. Manzoor Ahmed at the closing session.
The closing session was addressed by Dr. A.B. Mirza Azizul Islam, Adviser for Finance and Planning, as the Chief Guest. Ms. Rasheda K. Chowdhury, Mr. Ashraful Moqbul, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Education, Ms. Hua Du, Country Director, Asian Development Bank also spoke. Mr. M. Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, Secretary, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, chaired the session and Dr. Mahmudul Hassan, Secretary, Bangladesh National Commission for UNESCO made the concluding remarks.
