Ms. Jebunnesa Chowdhury, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (Biotechnology program), Brac University received the Bangabandhu Science and Technology fellowship award for 2018-2019 year from the Ministry of Science and Technology-Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. She was awarded with this scholarship by the honorable Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, People’s Republic of Bangladesh. Ministry of Science and Technology arranged the ceremony at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka on April 10, 2019. Ms. Jebunnesa Chowdhury is currently doing her Ph.D. in the Department of Botany, University of Dhaka.
A seminar was arranged on 25 April, 2019 in Room UB21511 of the MNS Department. One of the faculty member of MNS department- Tabassum Rahman Sunfi has presented her talk on “Fluorescence based Kompetitive (competitive) Allele specific PCR for high throughput SNP marker detection and validation”. The seminar was chaired by Professor Mahboob Hossain. Other faculty members and students were also present at the seminar.
Four students of BS in microbiology program defended their undergraduate theses on 25 th April, 2019 in the Room UB21511 of the MNS Department. Nowrin Hossain, Apsara Dey Jhilik, Saiful Islam and Shanto-Abu Nowroze Rafin presented the results of their study in the field environmental microbiology titled “ 'How safe is our drinking water? Microbiological quality of raw and domestically treated waters in Mohakhali, Niketon and Uttara", ''How safe is our drinking water? Microbiological quality of raw and domestically treated waters in Badda, Bashundhara, Rampura and Maghbazar.", 'How safe is our drinking water? Microbiological quality of raw and domestically treated waters in Jatrabari, Wari, Bongshal and khilgaon." and 'How safe is our drinking water? Microbiological quality of raw and domestically treated waters in Mirpur and Korail." respectively. Besides the thesis presentation Sumaiya Sultana of the Microbiology Program presented her internship report on the same day. The Viva-Voce Examination for the presentation was chaired by Professor M. Mahboob Hossain, Acting- Chairperson, Department of MNS, Dr.Iftekhar Bin Nasir, Assistant Professor, of the Biotechnology program, Ms Fahareen-Binta Mosharraf Senior lecturer of the Microbiology program and Mr. Mahbubul Hasan Siddiqee Senior Lecturer of the same program, Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, were also present as members of the Examination Committee. The committee highly commended the work carried out by the students.
A day long Curriculum Review Workshop of the Microbiology and Biotechnology programs, MNS Department, Brac University was held on 29 the GDLN of the building number 2 of the Brac University. The workshop was inaugurated by Professor Mohammad Tamim, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Brac University. Faculty members MNS and other departments including the Chairpersons of the Computer Sciences and Engineering Department Prof Dr Md Abdul Mottalib , current students and alumni of the Microbiology and Biotechnology programs were also present and given their valuable suggestions to upgrade the syllabus of the microbiology and
biotechnology programs. Three external experts, Professor Dr. Mohammed Nazmul Ahsan, Chairperson, Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Dhaka, Professor Dr. Md. Anwarul Azim Akhand, Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Dhaka, Professor Dr. Muhammad Monjurul Karim, Department of Microbiology, University of Dhaka critically analyzed the curriculum of the microbiology and microbiology programs and given their valuable input to improve and upgrade the curriculum. The workshop continued for the whole day and it was ended with thanks by Professor M. Mahboob Hossain, Convener of the workshop.
