BRAC University Department of Economics and Social Sciences (ESS) in collaboration with BRAC University Economics Club (BUEC) organized the first session of their public lecture series, “Why Economics?” conducted by Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud on December 06, 2017 at BRACU auditorium, Mohakhali campus.
Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud, former advisor to the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh, senior country advisor of International Growth Centre (IGC), chairman of South Asia Network of Research Institutes (SANEI), Economics Research Group (ERG) delivered the very informative and enlightening lecture based on the necessity of economics in real life. The lecture illustrated the real life relevance of major economic theories of market efficiency, international trade, public goods and rationality of economic behaviors, popular economic fallacies and the need for basic economic literacy. Also, the lecture included discussion on how the ideas of economics help in understanding the everyday economic issues as well as the rationale for public policy making as well as major failings of economic theories in addressing the issues of human well-being , income inequality, environmental degradation, economic forecasting and socio-political determinants of economic outcomes.
The lecture was graced by the vast range of audience including young enthusiastic students who were undoubtedly benefited by this knowledgeable session. Last but not the least, the audience was also graced by the presence of prominent guests and faculties like the Vice Chancellor of BRAC University, Chairperson of the Department of Economics and Social Sciences and many others.
