In the month of July, two articles of Imon Rahman, Senior Leturer, Department of Pharmacy, BRAC University and Ridwan Islam, Senior Lecturer, Department of Pharmacy, BRAC University have been published in the Journal of Applied Pharmacy.
The first article entitled ‘Assessing the Quality of Household and Drinking Water in Tongi Industrial Zone of Bangladesh and its Toxicological Impact on Healthy Sprague Dawley Rats’ has brought our attention towards the quality of water in the industrialized area. In recent times, rapid industrialization has led to the deterioration of water quality, which has its obvious effects on the health of common dwellers residing the industrialized areas. The study in this article examined the toxicological impact of industrialization on water resources as well as pharmacological effects of the contaminated household and drinking water of industrialized areas by carrying out experiments on animal models. Their study revealed the presence of high concentration of heavy metals in the industrialized areas. Additionally, it demonstrated the severe effect of this contaminated water on vital organs such as kidney and liver in rat models. These findings will definitely stimulate further study of these contaminated waters to reveal more about the molecular mechanism as well as their health impact. On the other hand, their second article entitled ‘Biological Evaluation of Native and Exotic Plants of Bangladesh’ has attempted to provide a scientific basis of traditional uses of some commonly used medicinal plants such as a native plant, Murdannia nudiflora, an exotic plant, Tradescantia pallida, and a common spice, Piper nigrum.
