Drug is an alarming global concern these days. Like many other countries in Bangladesh it is a terrible threat to the youth. With this awareness, to educate the Counseling Unit of BRAC University organized a seminar titled, “Awareness on Drug Dependency” on Saturday, June 06, 2015 at BRACU, Savar Campus. The objectives were to motivate students to work as a messenger for saving people from drugs and creating awareness among themselves how to get protected.
Mr. Rakibul Hasan Mahin & Mr. Saleh Siddique, Psychosocial Counselor & Lecturer of BRACU facilitated the session. One guest speaker Mr. Zahid Iqbal, Program Officer of Dhaka Ahsania Mission discussed on the concept of drugs, types of drugs, negative impacts of using drugs on individual, family and society. The personal sharing of Mr. Zahid’s own history of being addicted to drug was highly beneficial for students to understand the devastative impact of drug abuse. Mr. Mahin presented a motivational segment in order to help students to quit smoking focusing on the negative impacts of smoking and an effective technique known as “Self-reward” that would help student to quit smoking even during the time span of RS staying. Mr. Siddique provided further prevention techniques and tips to get protected from drugs and concluded by taking the students an oath of saying “NO” to drugs.
Throughout the seminar the students were responsive. The queries they made in the Q&A session asserted their high level of motivation to stay away from drug. All the students of RS, Summer-2015, members of Counseling Unit and admin/management staff of BRACU Savar Campus were present there and the seminar ended by giving thanks to them.
