Recognizing mental wellbeing is a crucial element of overall health, World Health Organization (WHO) annually observes World Mental Health Day on October 10. Bangladesh is also taking part in raising awareness on this issue. To observe this special day a seminar was organized by Counseling Unit of BRAC University in collaboration with Institute of Educational Development of BRAC University and Gender Justice and Diversity Program (GJ&D) of BRAC on October 16, 2014 at the university premises. The main objective of the seminar was raising awareness about mental health in community. In the seminar the focus was on this year’s theme, “Living with Schizophrenia” along with other mental health issues.
Professor Fuad Hassan Mallick, Pro-Vice Chancellor of BRAC University welcomed the guests and introduced the topic. Mr. Kamal Uddin Ahamed, Associate Professor, Department of Clinical Psychology, University of Dhaka explained the general mental illness to the guests. Renowned Psychologist and also consultant to BRAC University, Ms. Farida Akhtar described the general concepts of schizophrenia and its symptoms. Then Dr. Md. Zillur Rahman Khan, Assistant Professor, Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist, National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) explained the general guidelines of early intervention for schizophrenic patients and how family members can deal with them.
Ms. Sumaiya Anwar, Faculty and Coordinator of Counseling Unit, Dr. Nishat Fatima Rahman, Faculty and Coordinator of Psychosocial Lab, IED, BRAC University & Somajsongee; Ms Tahmina Yesmin, Senior Manager of GJ&D, BRAC share BRAC University and BRAC’s contribution in mental health field. Professor Riaz P. Khan, Dean, Student Affairs of BRAC University concluded the seminar with thanks. Distinguished guests from different departments of BRAC University and BRAC attended the seminar along with guests from University of Dhaka and different universities, NGOs and colleges.
