First hand or practical learning is something that enables a learner's innate curiosity and the desire to investigate real phenomena which theoretical learning is not capable. Students of BRAC University had visited Millennium Textiles LTD, Boro Rangamatia, Ashulia, Savar on 20th JULY under the supervision of Ms. Tania Akter, faculty member of BRAC Business School.
The journey was start at 9.30 from BRAC University Mohakhali campus by university bus. Millennium Textiles (Southern) Ltd. manufactures casual and formal woven shirts and blouses. The company is based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Millennium Textiles (Southern) Ltd. operates as a subsidiary of Renaissance Group.
Khondokar Younus Al Hossain, Director and Md. Ashrafur Rahman, COO of the company was present in this event and they gave different information regarding their operations. This company has different unit for completing their work smoothly. These are Fabric store room, manufacturing unit, inspection room, boiling room, lunch room, day care service. The product manufacturing unit is divided in mainly four sections. These are: Cutting, Sewing, Finishing and Packaging. The quality check (QC) is under finishing section.
The leading role of a cutting department is to cut garment components from fabric rolls as per style specifications. Moreover, send the cut components to sewing department in bundles. The designs or styles are usually provided by the ordering company. However, the garment has specific unit for designing. They also produce their design by getting approval of ordering company. The fabrics also provided by the company. A cutting department of a garment manufacturing unit includes following sub-processes. Fabric spreading / layering on cutting table, marker making, machine cutting, shorting and bundling, inspection of cut components, re-cutting of panels if necessary.
Millennium Textiles (Southern) Ltd also offer some other benefits to their worker. They have day care system for the children of workers. The workers also have separate place to lunch. Counselling unit, union are also part of the company. They also provide incentives for excellent work.
The company in charge were present to help the students. They described everything in detail and answered every question. They were heartily allowing them to visit every section. This tour was a part of BUS 101 course taught by Ms. Tania Akter, faculty of BRAC Business School, to help students understand and get the feeling of real business environment, processes, and challenges, dealing orders from foreign buyers and the total process of finished garments and so on.
