Dr. Wahid Abdallah, Assistant Professor at ESS has published a discussion paper (working paper) at the Institute of Labor Studies (IZA), Bonn, Germany. The paper, titled "Corruption in the Health Sector: Evidence from Unofficial Consultation Fees in Bangladesh", looks into the illegal practices of doctors charging consultation fees in public health facilities in Bangladesh. The paper finds that about 41% of patients going to public health facilities and the consultation fee constitute 16% of total health expenditures. Furthermore, it has found that patients spend more time and money to reach the health facility and richer patients end up paying more.
