First year students of Department of Architecture, BRAC University went on a study tour of the Curzon Hall and the Institute of Fine Arts of Dhaka University. As a part of the course ARC101: Design I, students undertook this study tour to develop their observation capabilities and learn from old and new architecture. They produced freehand sketches to illustrate and express architectural details. Course instructors Professor Zainab Faruqui Ali, Shams Mansoor Ghani, Md. Samiur Rahman Bhuiyan and Emmat Ara Khanam explained the history of the buildings to the students. Afterwards a guided architectural tour was given to the Institute of Fine Arts, Dhaka University. Professor Ali stressed on the importance of the building, which introduced modern architecture in Bangladesh, designed by eminent architect Muzharul Islam.
Panam Nagar at Sonargaon of Narayanganj is the first urban settlement in the country. It was built by the wealthy merchant class during late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Comprised of 52 buildings on both sides of a road, this settlement is an example of colonial architectural style. As a part of the course ARC101: Design I, Department of Architecture, BRAC University the students had a study tour of the place and spent the day seeing, observing and sketching the heritage buildings. The course instructors Professor Zainab Faruqui Ali, Shams Mansoor Ghani, Md. Samiur Rahman Bhuiyan and Emmat Ara Khanam briefed the architectural and historical values of the settlement to the students and guided them on how to observe and express the architectural essence and details through sketches.
Sketches from both the excursions were displayed in the Open House Exhibition titled 'Muhurto' on 18 November 2018.
