Professor Shahidur has presented a paper in an International Conference on Sustaining Global Garment Industry at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology on March 5-7, 2019 organized by Aalborg University, Denmark. Dr Shaidur’s paper has focused on “Governing Labour Standards for Social Sustainability in Garment Global Production Networks: Perspectives from Below.” He argues that although there are significant breakthroughs in terms of developing a culture of safety adhered to by the government and entrepreneurs, the absence of 'shared responsibility' between different actors, including the buyers, challenges of the sustainability of this governance mechanism. He raises some questions for the disjuncture between Accord-Alliance and local factory management. What has the Accord and the Alliance achieved in terms of the safety of factories and their workers? What problems are managers encountering in their efforts to meet with the measures recommended by inspections carried out under the agreements? These are some of the questions this paper seeks to address through its interviews with managers who have been working with the two initiatives. The two specific objectives are: what are the positive impacts of these initiatives on the RMG sector as perceived by these managers and what is the nature of the problems that they have encountered?
