Publication of Research Paper by BIL Lecturer
Mr. Mohammad Mosiur Rahman, Lecturer at Brac Institute of Languages (BIL), and Dr. Manjet Kaur Mehar Singh, Associate Professor at Universiti Sains Malaysia, have jointly published a journal article titled "English Medium university STEM teachers’ and students’ ideologies in constructing content knowledge through translanguaging" in International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, a top journal in the field of linguistics (20/187 in Linguistics; Impact Factor- 2.16; Source: Journal Citation Report, 2019).
The study highlighted the linguistic hegemony of English as a medium of instruction in higher education in Bangladesh, which overlooks the full linguistic repertoire of learners and teachers. Participants of the study indicated the importance of translanguaging in STEM classes in constructing content knowledge, questioning the utility of English-only language policy. While commenting on the findings of the study, Mr. Rahman expressed his deep concern over the issue of linguistic rights and called for further studies to find out the ways to incorporate students' home language in English-only STEM classrooms to promote knowledge construction and to attain a sustainable language policy for multilingual universities.
