To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the UN Resident Coordinator (UNRC) Office in Bangladesh, with support of the School of Law at BRAC University, organized a dialogue on "Digital Laws and Freedom of Expression - Human Rights 75" at the university on 21 May, 2023.
Professor Syed Mahfuzul Aziz, PhD, Acting Vice Chancellor and Pro-Vice Chancellor of BRAC University, delivered the welcome address. A dialogue was initiated through the speeches of Dr. Kaberi Gayen, Professor of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at the University of Dhaka, Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul, a senior journalist, and Ahsan Adelur Rahman, a member of parliament. Tim Engelhardt, Human Rights Officer, Rule of Law and Democracy Section, United Nations Office in Geneva, provided remarks virtually. The dialogue concluded with remarks from the chief guest, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Huq.
There was a question-and-answer session afterwards, participated by law students from the University of Dhaka, Jagannath University, Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh
University of Professionals, and BRAC University. Ms. Gwyn Lewis moderated the dialogue and question-and-answer session and delivered the concluding remarks. K. Shamsuddin Mahmood, Professor and Dean of the School of Law at BRAC University, faculty members of BRAC University, guests from several diplomatic missions, international development partner organizations, journalists, and members of the civil society attended the dialogue.
