Professor Shahidur Rahman has received two research grants for projects centering on the Ready Made Garments (RMG) industry of Bangladesh. While one grant was awarded for a project entitled “Supervisors in the RMG sector in Bangladesh and the effects on Women Workers Empowerment” by GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), the other grant was awarded by the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) for the project, “Promoting Just Transition and environmental sustainability in the Bangladesh RMG industry”.
The research team for the project funded by GIZ consists of Ishmam Al Quddus, Lecturer at ESS and alumnus Shaan Washique Akbar. The project aims to explore the relationship between supervisory roles and the performance and agency of women workers in factories. The research team for the ETI funded project incorporates Dr Moiyen Zalal Chowdhury from the ESS Department, along with alumnus Priyong Sabastini. The project studies the perceived obstacles and readiness amongst different stakeholders regarding the greening process of the RMG industry. Professor Shahidur will lead these research projects and aim to complete the studies by December 2023.
