Dr. Asifa Sultana, a professor at the Department of English and Humanities of BRAC University, has become one of the recipients of the Engaged Research Fund for 2022 provided by the Talloires Network of Engaged Universities and Open Society University Network (OSUN).
The Talloires network and OSUN are international associations for collaborations among universities, institutes and think tanks towards teaching, research and other forms of exchanges. The platforms awarded 24 grants to faculty and graduate students in 14 countries to support their engaged scholarship.
Dr. Sultana received hers for a project titled “Education in One’s Own Language Through Community Participation” which aims to understand the sociolinguistic landscape of some areas in the northern borders of Bangladesh and Pashchimbanga, India. Based on the language data, the investigators will develop educational materials appropriate for primary school children in those areas. In this project, Dr. Sultana will work in collaboration with Dr. Dripta Piplai (Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur), Dr. Soma Paul (International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad), and Indrani Roy (independent research consultant). The first phase of data collection began in October 2022.
