BRAC University Communications and Language Club (BUCLC) welcomed a new set of fresh talents to BRAC University on the 27th of July 2016 through “Freshers’ Talk”, an event organized under the supervision of Ms. Farina Haque, Lecturer of BRAC Institute of Languages also the Co-adviser to BUCLC to provide a platform to the first semester students who have participated in the English Speaking Activity in the Listening Lab regularly to demonstrate their English speaking skills.
The theme of the Talk reverberated around the topics that were based on “social and personal relationships”, “family bonding”, “role of good friends”, “responsibilities towards self and the society” to raise consciousness and instigate positive energy in building a strong society and boost up the connection between self and the society from deep personal level of every student.
Following the tradition of previous semesters, BUCLC has successfully arranged the English Speaking Activity throughout the semester, Summer 2016. Four days a week, the sessions were conducted by the senior students, recruited and trained by Ms. Farina Haque. She also developed activity plans in a way that would engage students’ more in the activities and ensure better learning outcomes allowing learners to participate enthusiastically throughout the sessions. Ms. Nusrat Jahan Ema, Lecturer, BRAC Institute of Languages and Mr. Md. Mahbubul Islam, Lecturer, BRAC Institute of Languages have worked along with her throughout the semester. For the student mentors it was a pleasant learning experience throughout the semester to guide the freshers in developing their English communication skills, particularly speaking and listening skills that has made them more confident than before.
On the finale, 39 students, who have participated in the English Speaking Activities regularly, took part in the impromptu presentations in a cozy environment in the Listening Lab. They were further given constructive feedback by their very own mentors who led the sessions. For the mentors, it was surely a proud moment and a rewarding experience of being in the judges’ panel throughout the event and seeing the freshers delivering impromptu speech in English with more confidence and also in a more organized manner in the finale compared to their first day in the sessions. Adding to that, the learners will soon be provided with a certificate for their active participation in the sessions. Along with the certificates, the best three performers, chosen based on an accumulative score given by both the judge students and the Faculty members on their performance, will be awarded with medals.
After pulling off the very successful event, “Freshers' Talk”, BUCLC hopes to continue their journey in helping out freshers with their English speaking in the coming semesters as well.
