Computational Finance and Statistical Analysis (CFSA) Research Group jointly with Brac University Computer Club (BUCC) members organized a workshop on Micro-services & Scalable Design of Web Applications. The event was held on February 5th, 2019. The event took place at the UB71201 of Brac University.
The goal of this seminar was to encourage entrepreneurial innovative ideas and exploring current norms to resolve challenges during designing scalable web application. The session was an excellent inauguration for someone who wants to learn about scalable, load balanced, clustered data handling cloud services platform.
At first, Sheikh Rubabuddin Osmani, Co-Founder and Chief Architect, Cloudslip & Senior Software Development Engineer, Expedia introduced himself to everyone. He explained that Expedia is one of the largest travel platforms in the world. They are trying to build a platform in the service for software engineers to deploy their applications in the cloud. He shared that Expedia has offices in around 70 countries with 10,000 software engineers along with around 22,000 employees working.
After that Mr. Osmani talked about Netflix. Netflix serves thousands of people per second and is based on a scalable backend process. So it has to be updated every minute. So in order to serve that many people who watch movies or web series on millions of devices without any issues, they have to scale the backend of their application. He then talked about microservices: the benefits and necessity. He explained the hardships and challenges they had to face to maintain the Microservice Architecture. His discussion included containers which are necessary to implement microservice.
He enlightened the audience about inception of the company and the difficulties they faced. Then he showed a quick review of their products and tools. After that, he showed how their applications work. He also informed us that they are now trying to focus more on R & D by this year. He hopes that a lot of plans and applications will come from the students of Brac University to become a part of expedia’s efforts. By thanking everyone, he then passed the floor to Dr. Iftekharul Mobin, Assistant Professor, CSE Department, Brac University. After saying a few words through an interactive session, he concluded the event.
The event would not have been successful without the help of the members of BUCC. Special Thanks goes to Sadia Rahman, Anindo Mashiat, Jannatul Ferdous, A.E.M Ridwan, Fahd Zakwan, Asif Shariar, Arman Hossain, Mekhala Mariam, and Jamius Siam. Thanks to Sadia Rahman, Anindo Mashiat, Jannatul Ferdous and Afif Bin Jinnat for covering the PR.
