The Department of English and Humanities had its knowledge sharing session (Workshop 2) of its Self-Assessment Practice on October 19, 2017, at the BRAC University Building 2 auditorium. In the workshop, members of the relevant stakeholders (current ENH students, alumni, academic and non-academic staff, employers) were present. The program started with a brief welcome note by Professor Firdous Azim, the Head of ENH Self-Assessment Practice, which highlighted the necessity of the practice for the department as well as for the university. The key part of the workshop involved dissemination of the survey results in front of the audience. Dr. Rifat Mahbub, Assistant Professor and S.M. Mohibul Hasan, Lecturer, both members of the Self-Assessment team, explained the findings in this well-attended session. The findings covered the main aspects of evaluations such as governance and management, course curriculum and course load, teaching-learning and assessment methods, research opportunities etc.
The second half of the session involved open discussion, moderated by Professor Firdous Azim. The session was very helpful as it opened opportunities to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the program, in this respect the views of the alumni and the employers were very significant. Elita Karim, the editor of the Star Weekend, the Daily Star, opined that ENH students should be given more opportunities to mix with people of all walks of lives to gain deep insights about the real world. Other employers emphasized on the necessity to develop basic technological skills among students, since many ENH graduates tend to work in the field of print and electronic media. A number of alumni had suggested the current students to make the proper use of their time at the university, so that they could be ready for the demands of job market. Current students expressed the necessity of offering more courses throughout the year. The workshop was attended by members of major employer bodies of BRACU ENH graduates, which included private universities, private electronic media firms, national and international non-government and research organizations. The workshop also worked as an important social platform for alumni, current students, as well as employers and faculty members. Professor Dr. Tafazzal Hossain, Head of BRAC University Self-Assessment Program, was present throughout the session.
