The Office of Academic Advising (OOA) of BRAC University (BRACU) arranged two meetings at its Mohakhali campus on Thursday, 24 January 2019, with parents of spring 2019 semester students who are on probation.
The meetings aimed at encouraging parents to pay more attention to their children’s studies.
Addressing the events, Assistant Professor Dilara Afroz Khan, director of the OAA, said BRACU nurtures students as if they were its own children but parents have to play a vital role too.
They should monitor their children’s studies, class attendance and who their companions were and contact the department coordination officers if needed, she said.
Psychosocial Counselor Monzia Mushtaq, also a lecturer of Counseling Unit, said yelling at children for faults was not an ideal practice.
Instead of putting the blame on children, parents should be patient, have conversations with them and, most importantly, develop personal interactions, she said.
Lecturer Tanjila Ferdous of the BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL) informed parents about the probation policy rules. Deputy Controller of Examination Nazmus Sabeka and BIL Lecturer Adrita Mulk were also present.
