BRAC University Community Service Club and Peace Cafe in association with the Office of Co-curricular Activities (OCA) organized a creativity workshop for underprivileged children at the university’s auditorium on 16 August, 2022 in observance of 15th August, National Mourning Day.
On 15 August in 1975, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was assassinated along with all his family members, except for his two daughters -- Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana -- who were abroad at the time.
The group of children invited to the university study at Youth School, a primary education institution run by Youth Movements, a non-profit organization founded in December 2017. The children heard about the life and ideals of Bangabandhu and how Bangladesh gained independence through the 1971 Liberation War. Following that, students rendered a poem paying tribute to Bangabandhu. Afterwards they were asked to draw how they viewed Bangabandhu as a leader.
Special guest Dr David Dowland, Registrar of BRAC University, along with Tahsina Rahman, Joint Director, Campus Life, and Deepti Sarkar, Senior Manager, Admissions Outreach and Recruitment, Office of the Registrar, shared their insights and inspired all to carry on the legacy of Bangabandhu. Three of the children received awards for their creations while the rest tokens of appreciation. Thus, through the creation of an atmosphere of care, celebrating creativity and distributing sustenance, a meaningful space was carved within the mourning day's observance.
