BRAC University (BRACU) paid homage to the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement marking the Language Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day through a live programme on its official Facebook page on 21 February, 2022. The event was organised by BRAC University Communication and Language Club (BUCLC), BRAC University Cultural Club (BUCuC) and the Office of Co-curricular Activities (OCA).
The 45-minute programme started off at 3:00PM with a speech by Registrar Dr David Dowland in which he highlighted the sacrifices made to establish the right to speak in the mother tongue as well as protecting self-identity, culture and heritage. Ms. Ismat Shereen, Head of International and Scholarship Office, then paid rich tributes to the heroes of the Language Movement who laid down their lives for Bangla to be recognised as the state language in erstwhile Pakistan.
Under her guidance, several BRACU students from countries, including Nepal and Bhutan, sang songs, recited poems and conveyed greetings marking the day. One student from Uganda sang “Amar bhaiyer rokte rangano Ekushey February” and two members of the BUCLC recited Syed Shamsul Haque's poem "Amar porichoy" which expresses patriotism and affection for the homeland and love for the mother tongue.
