The Centre for Peace and Justice of Brac University and Naripokkho jointly organised a two days long training on "Accountability for Serious Human Rights Violations in Asia" on 9th & 10th March 2019 in Dhaka. The training was conducted by the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and attended by a score of Bangladeshi lawyers, activists and academics from different Universities, NGOs and INGOs.
The Training aimed to explore the socio-political and justice context of Myanmar, the changing pattern of violence and persecution and seeking legal mechanisms to enable accountability for serious human rights violations.
Sean Bain, Legal Adviser to ICJ, facilitated a session on geo-political context of Myanmar and its judicial system, rule of law as well as Rohingya crisis.
Kingsley Abbott, the senior legal adviser of ICJ, provided an overview of the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM), currently being established following a UN Human Rights Council resolution in September 2018. He specifically discussed about the International Criminal Court (ICC) system and the potential scopes and challenges to file a case against Myanmar for Rohingya ethnic cleansing and genocide.
Patrick Burgess, the President of Asia Justice and Rights (AJAR), conducted session on different international court systems, transitional justice including truth seeking strategies, reparation, institutional and social reform for accelerate prosecution and promoting justice.
Mr. Shahariar Sadat, Academic Coordinator of CPJ, and Ms. Shireen Huq from Naripokkho, anchored the training. Mr. Azizul Hoque, Research Assistant of CPJ provided the administrative and logistic support to the event.
