“Earthy Expressions - A Distinctive Approach to Sustainability" is a workshop on rammed-earth construction. This traditional building method combines natural materials with contemporary design approaches and places a strong emphasis on environmental awareness. The workshop engages both students and local artisans, fostering a connection between education. local culture, and sustainable practices. By utilizing locally sourced soil and environmentally friendly additives, the project has to minimize carbon emissions, thereby fostering a deeper appreciation for the earth’s resources. It serves as a source of inspiration for students, architects, and the wider community, encouraging the adoption of sustainable and aesthetically pleasing designs while highlighting the importance of such choices in mitigating the effects of climate change. This initiative redefines conventional construction practices, providing a sustainable eco-friendly solution to the pressing environmental challenges of today.
Leading this workshop is Dr Zainab Faruqui Ali, Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Architecture at BRAC University, with coordination by Emmat Ara Khanam, a Lecturer of the same department. Additionally, Mohammad Zillur Rahman, Senior Lecturer, along with Md Rakibul Hasan and Upama Das Nitu, Teaching Assistants of the Department are helping in this endeavor.
The workshop is funded by the Open Society University Network (OSUN) Climate Education Grant and conducted by the Department of Architecture. School of Architecture and Design, BRAC University. Social Impact Lab of BRAC University is also collaborating in this initiative.
