Shaiya Binte Mahbub, a Senior Lecturer at the School of General Education of BRAC University, has taken part in the “First Annual Elkana Symposium on Reimagining Teaching and Learning” which was held at Central European University in Vienna, Austria from 11-14 July, 2023.
The symposium brought together faculty members, doctoral students, education researchers and practitioners across Open Society University Network (OSUN) to share innovative and successful practices as well as develop their own skills through workshops and training sessions.
Supported by the OSUN Developing Teaching Professionals (DTP) project, the event consisted of three days of intensive presentations, training, discussion and workshops on inclusive and democratic teaching and learning, inquiry-based learning approaches, teaching and learning in the age of AI, game-based learning approaches, discipline-specific pedagogies and interdisciplinary and transferable skills.
It featured four keynote lectures by Professor Samia Huq (Dean of the School of General Education and Professor of Anthropology at BRAC University), Dr. Sylvie Lomer (The University of Manchester), Professor Carol Taylor (University of Bath), Dr. Jen Harvey (Technological University Dublin), and other academicians and trainers.
Mahbub contributed as a panelist and presented her paper on the “Importance of Experiential Learning in Higher Education”, a case study based on BRAC University. She shared her theoretical and practical framework on developing students’ ability to apply ethical arguments and concepts in contemporary social issues, improving the value of diversity and inclusion, and the application of knowledge towards problem-solving in and outside the classroom by exhibiting sensitive and ethical leadership through teamwork and exposure to real-life problems. She took part in workshops and training sessions.
