Professor Shahidur Rahman and his team presented the findings of his research project titled, “Supervisors in the RMG sector in Bangladesh and the effects on Women Workers Empowerment” at Hotel Renaissance on the 14th of December. The research was funded by GIZ, and the research team includes professor Shahidur Rahman, lecturer Ishmam Al Quddus, and BRACU alumnus Shaan Washique. Stakeholders of the study including brands such as H&M , development partners including CARE and ILO, compliance officers, and lawyers were present at the dissemination. The status of RMG supervisors, their mobility issues, legal rights, inability to unionize, social protection, and the gendered obstacles of role were discussed. The inability of supervisors to unionize, and the general lack of unions across many professions in Bangladesh was one of the biggest challenges found in the study.
