Farzana Munshi is a Professor of Economics at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences since 2018. She joined Brac University in 2009 as Assistant Professor and became Associate Professor in 2012. Prior to joining Brac University she taught at Queen’s School of Management, Queen’s University, Belfast. Currently she is a Professorial Research Fellow at the Global Development Institute (GDI), University of Manchester. She was an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham and at the advisory board of the Royal Academy of Engineering Fellowship. Farzana served as Interim Head of the Department of Economics and Social Sciences in different periods. She also served as coordinator of graduate and undergraduate programs of Economics. Farzana teaches Macroeconomics, Labour Economics, International Trade and Finance at undergraduate and post-graduate level. She has made academic and research collaboration with Rand Corporation, USA, University of Birmingham, Heriot-Watt University, University of Kent, International Institute of Refrigeration, France and University of Manchester. Farzana received research grants from the Japan Economic Foundation/ERIA, Newton/Global Challenge Research Fund under the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and IZA/DFID GLM|LIC Program. She was the recipient of the Swedish Wallander-Hedelius Foundation scholarship in 2006-2008.
Her research area is broadly development and labour economics. She has worked on international trade and labour market issues in developed and developing countries. Her research is published in reputed journals such as World Economy, Singapore Economic Review, The Journal of International Trade and Economic Development, IZA Journal of Development and Migration, Bangladesh Development Studies. Farzana has contributed to policy making through Bangladesh Government’s Five Year Plans. She has been a consultant to the World Bank, International Institute of Refrigeration, France and International Labour Organization.
