
Tanzil Shafique
Tanzil Shafique, Assoc. AIA, is an Assistant Professor of Urban Design at University of Sheffield School of Architecture. He completed his Ph.D. at the Melbourne School of Design where he also taught graduate urban planning and design studios. He is an honorary member of the Informal Urbanism Research Hub (InfUr-) at the University of Melbourne. Tanzil co-founded and now co-directs Open Studio, a UK-based think-tank on architecture and urbanism. Previously he was a Research Fellow and Faculty member at the Fay Jones School of Architecture + Design at the University of Arkansas, USA. He is involved in community outreach activities such as convening the Platform for Housing Justice (Najjyo Abashon Moncho). He holds a professional B.Arch from BRAC University and an M.Arch in Ecological Urbanism from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York.
After his graduation from Brac University in 2011, Tanzil joined there as a Teaching Assistant. He taught until 2013, when he went to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York, USA for his M.Arch where he graduated with the highest distinction there in 2014 and joined the architectural firm Roger Ferris + Partners. After three months, he joined the University of Arkansas's Community Design Centre at the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design as an Urban Designer and Adjunct Faculty.
After three years, in 2017, Tanzil moved to the University of Melbourne, Australia to pursue his Ph.D. in Urban Design. There he was also appointed as an adjunct faculty and taught M.Arch and Masters of Urban Planning studios. He has also worked as a Research Assistant at the Informal Urbanism Research Hub.
At the end of his Ph.D., in 2021, Tanzil moved to the UK to join the University Of Sheffield School of Architecture as an Assistant Professor. Currently, he is the Programme Leader of the Masters of Urban Design Programme and Leader of Internationalisation of the school.
In addition, he co-convened the Platform for Just Housing (Najjyo Abashon Moncho), a collective place for activism regarding housing rights and the climate change impact of informal settlements in Bangladesh.
