Kumon is a comprehensive learning programme for Math and English which has been founded in 1958 by a high school math teacher in Japan named Toru Kumon. The programme targets students going from preschool all the way up to college level. It is an individualized programme suitable for children of diverse needs and abilities. Students may take either one or both the programmes at the appropriate level determined by a Placement Test.
The Kumon Mathematics Programme is offered in all countries where Kumon operates and helps children develop problem solving skills. While enhancing their calculation skills, students also cultivate their mathematical analysis and logical thinking abilities which will be indispensable to their lives in the future. This leads them to develop the ability to solve various problems that they will face in their adult life. The foreign language programme of Kumon provides students with ample exposure to their target language on a daily basis while allowing them to acquire high-level reading comprehension and listening skills through the well-designed worksheets. Math and Language worksheets of Kumon focus on the development of strong calculation skills and language comprehension by avoiding all unrelated concepts with an aim to allow students to make progress independently to an advanced level as quickly as possible.
Today, Kumon has established centers in 49 countries assisting a student base of more than 4.2 million globally aiming to unlock the potential in every child. Kumon has been working with BRAC for last two years to implement its programme for the underprivileged students through BRAC Schools.
BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL) is currently working with Kumon to establish the first Kumon centers in Dhaka to offer its programmes for students from all tiers of the society. Mr. Nehal Bin Hasan, of BIL is working as the Project In-charge for the aforementioned project.
