Dr. Iftekhar Ahmed, an Associate Professor and previous Program Convener of the Master of Disaster Resilience and Sustainable Development, University of Newcastle, Australia has been awarded the CARSHA Research Fellowship this year. Along with Dr. Fuad Hassan Mallick and Dr. Rajib Shaw, Dr. Ahmed is involved as an advisor to CARSHA.
Dr. Ahmed teaches policy and social aspects of disaster risk reduction, resilience of the built environment, and sustainable development. His research interests include post-disaster housing, disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, and urbanization in the Asia-Pacific. He has written several books and many peer-reviewed publications, and he engages in various research and evaluation projects relating to disaster resilience. He is the lead author of the recent book "Disaster Resilience in South Asia: Tackling the Odds in the Sub-Continental Fringes" (Routledge, UK, 2020). Dr. Ahmed completed his PhD from Oxford Brookes University, UK; Master of Science in Architecture Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA; and Bachelor of Architecture (hons.), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, India.
The Cell for Adaptation, Resilience, Security, and Humanitarian Assistance (CARSHA) is a research and collaboration cell that runs under the Postgraduate Programs in Disaster Management (PPDM) of the Department of Disaster Management of the School of Architecture and Design. The cell is set up to plan and carry out many academic, professional, and research initiatives and programs that fall under the broad heading of disaster management and humanitarian aid. It offers fellowships to students, researchers, academics, and professionals to get involved in the respective activities of the cell. Four types of fellowships are offered: Student Fellowship; Research Fellowship; Academic Fellowship; and Professional Fellowship.

He joined the PPDM on October 22, 2023. He will be involved in research work with faculty members (Dr. Imon Chowdhooree and Mr. Muhammad Ferdaus) of the PPDM. Additionally, he will deliver lectures on his previous and recent research works. He will also mentor the postgraduate students of PPDM in developing their research skills and writing dissertations.
