Professor Shahidur Rahman of the Economics and Social Sciences (ESS) department has been awarded a research project jointly funded by GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaftfür Internationale Zusammenarbeit), a German development agency and ETI (Ethical Trade Initiative) to conduct a study on “Declining proportion of female workers in the Bangladesh garment industry”. The objectives of the project are to (1) find out whether the proportion of female workers has been declining over time in the RMG sector of Bangladesh, (2) understand the factors behind the changing proportion of female workers in the labour force and (3) explore the implications of this change in the industry and female labour market. Dr. Wasiqur Rahman Khan of ESS and Dr. Shibly Shahriar, currently at Kyoto University, Japan will work as Co-researchers in this project.
