BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL), BRAC University, organised the Chinese New Year Festival 2018 at its Mohakhali campus. The day-long celebration was held at the university auditorium on February 11, 2018. Professor Ansar Ahmed, Pro-Vice Chancellor of BRAC University, was present as the Chief Guest, and Mr. Zha Mingwei, Cultural Officer, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Bangladesh, joined the programme as the Special Guest. Also present was Ms. Jannatun Naher, Lecturer at Institute of Modern Languages (IML), Dhaka University.
Professor Ahmed inaugurated the day-long programme by wishing everyone a ‘Happy New Year’ in Chinese. Remembering his days in China, he expressed his admiration for the Chinese culture and people.
Appreciating the programme Mr. Mingwei said, “BRAC University may not only remain the number-one private university in Bangladesh, but in near future it may become the number-one university in South Asia, Asia and even in the world.”
Students and faculty members took part in different Chinese cultural activities such as calligraphy, song, dance, Kung Fu, and fun games with attractive prizes. Some popular Chinese films like Kung Fu Yoga, Born in China and Wolf Warrior II were screened at the event as well.
The programme was coordinated by Mr. Yang Jiansheng, Ms. Farina Haque and Mr. Imam Zafar Numanee, faculty members at BIL. BRAC University alumnus engineer Mr. Sheikh Korban Ali, who earned his Masters degree from China with Chinese Government Scholarship in 2010, along with his organisation MalishaEdu, helped the students to prepare for the cultural performances. He also brought prizes and souvenirs for the performers from China. The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Bangladesh also provided BRAC University with all necessary support in organising the programme.
