Life is a walking shadow- Shakespeare. Indeed it is; with many things wrapping into its veil of potentialities, dreams, aspirations, disappointments, desire and so on. Every emotion, thought and behavior are uniquely important and needed in embark of life; which we live by not only with ourselves but also many other persons around us. On that note understanding the processing of our mental state can make us aware and comfortable which helps us to maintain healthy relationships in every sphere of our life specially the student life of graduation phase to name. This is one of the special times of every student’s life from where they can earn a sense of sharing, understanding and adjusting with self and the other students come from different places.
Therefore, to aware students about the significance of well adjustment, the Relationship Management Office of BRAC University organizes workshop in every semester on “Adjustment with Self and Others” with the students of BRAC University girls’ Hostel. During this semester, the workshop was held on 23 January 2018 and it was facilitated by Ms. Tasnuva Huque and Ms. Tanzila Huq from the Counseling Unit of BRAC University.
The objectives of the workshop were to aware the students to care about the meaning of adjustment, different aspects of adjustments, characteristics of a well adjusted person and some effective tools to make hostel life as well as university life more productive and enjoyable.
The workshop begun with an open discussion with the students by introducing the facilitators to them. They were been requested to share their experiences regarding their life of the present moments and how they are adjusting with new environment. Shortly after that, discussion was held on the different aspects of adjustment, and how this issue is connected and important to lead a healthy life as mental health is also an important factors in the proper definition of health given by World Health Organization (WHO). A smoothing meditation to deepen their insights about the characteristics of adjusted person has also been conducted. Later on, some effective tools were introduced to make their university life more productive. Student’s expressions, sharings through their enthusiastic participation throughout the whole workshop made it really vivid and enjoying for both them and the facilitators. They also expressed their needs to do such workshop more often throughout their university life and also suggested to conduct workshops on other psychosocial issues as well.
