Masuda Khan, an undergrad student of ENH, has won the Global Undergraduate Awards 2021 for the categories of both 'Highly Commended' and 'Regional Award' under the linguistics stream. The paper she submitted was titled "Critical Discourse Analysis on the Rohingya Crisis – Suu Kyi vs. Yunus". The Highly Commended award is given to the top 10% entries, while the regional award is to honour the best entry in the region - in my case being Asia.
Ms. Khan, specifically chose this topic because both of these renowned personalities - Aung San Suu Kyi and Dr Muhammad Yunus - have in common the prestige of being Nobel Peace Prize laureates, and because they are from Bangladesh and Myanmar respectively. She analysed their conflicting views on the Rohingya Crisis. This was a very interesting study because these two people who are renowned for their goodwill have their violently opposing views on this delicate topic of mass genocide. The paper emerged from the final term paper she had written for one of the ENH courses titled, ENG 221: Discourse Analysis.
The Global Undergraduate Awards is an academic awards program that recognises undergraduate work. It awards students from all over the world. Students can apply to one of 25 different disciplines, under the patronage of Ireland's president Micheal D Higgins. The submissions are made maintaining anonymity and are evaluated by a group of international academics of each respective field.
Brac University has a campus ambassador of the awards, Israr Hassan, whom students may contact at israrhasan[at]live[dot]com regarding applying for the award.
