The School of Architecture and Design, BRAC University is proud to announce that it will be launching soon the programs - Certificate and Advanced Certificate in Human Centered Design – the first of its kind in Bangladesh by a University.
Human Centered Design (HCD) is a relatively new discipline, emerging in the 1940’s. It is an approach to problem solving which takes into account the human perspective in the entire process of designing. The process of HCD is to understand a design problem by empathizing with the user’s point of view, and to seek a solution through ideation, prototyping and testing, that is able to serve its user in a manner that is efficient, promotes and preserves human skills.
Agencies, companies, institutions, NGO’s, INGO’s in Bangladesh have been utilizing HCD processes in their operations. Yet, there is no formal education in Bangladesh in this discipline. There is the need for a well thought out academic program to meet this need. The certificate and the advanced certificate program intend to provide its students with a basic but strong knowledge in the field.
The Certificate in Human Centered Design is a graduate level program for students who want to advance their knowledge and skills in design thinking, user-centered design and user experience. The program is tiered in 2 levels. Students completing the first part will be eligible for a Certificate in Human Centered Design (6 months), and those continuing for the independent research project and portfolio will be eligible for an Advanced Certificate in the same area (9 months).
The students will learn to study and design smart and intuitive solutions keeping users at the center. The program will introduce the latest theories practiced in leading industries across the globe, while also contextualizing how they can be applied in Bangladesh. The program will also stress the importance of building design-friendly work culture, honing the students’ skills towards research and designing collaboratively with dynamic and interdisciplinary teams. They will be taught by highly experienced and qualified faculty members who are leaders in their field. They will interact with well-known professionals, through guest lectures and seminars.
The curriculum has been designed with the help of some qualified User Experience and Human Centered designers and reviewed by Dr. Carolyn Wei, UX Research Lead, Facebook. The Architecture program of the School, which is Human Centric in its essence, will significantly contribute to it.
