Professor A.S Islam joined BRAC University on 21st of August as a consultant on 21st August for launching M.Sc in Biotech in BU. Professor Ahmad Shamsul Islam obtained the following degrees: BSc (Hons) and MSc from Presidency College, Calcutta. He obtained a Ph. D. from Manchester University which awarded him "The Currie Memorial Prize" prize for his outstanding work Post Doctoral Experience: Sponsored by National Academy of Sciences, USA, his post-doctoral activity (1961-1962) was at Cornell University, Ithaca; (1962-1963) at the University of California, Davis; and at Nottingham University, UK on a UNESCO fellowship and at the University of Tokyo on a Japanese Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) fellowship. He has published nearly 100 papers in national and international journals including four in the prestigious British journal, "Nature" and one in the topmost USA science journal "Science". He has written two textbooks on genetics, "Fundamentals of Genetics" and its Bangla version, "Bongshogati bidyar Moolkatha". He received the prestigious "Ekushey Padak" for promoting education in 1985-86 (corresponding to Bengali year). The Bangladesh Academy of Science awarded him with a Gold Medal in 1987 and adjudged him the best scientist in biology for that year.
