Firdous Azim, PhD

Professor and Chairperson

Firdous Azim is a Professor of English and is chair of the Department of English and Humanities at BRAC University. She is also a member of Naripokkho, a woman’s activist group in Bangladesh. She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Sussex, UK in 1989 and was awarded a fellowship by the University as one of its fifty most distinguished alumni and academics in 2012.

Firdous Azim has published widely both in the field of post-colonialism and literature, as well as on feminist issues. Her books include The Colonial Rise of the Novel (Routledge, 1993) and Infinite Variety: Women in Society and Literature (University Press Limited, Dhaka, 1996). She is a contributing editor for Feminist Review, for which she has edited a special issue entitled South Asian Feminisms: Negotiating New Terrains. (March 2009). She has edited a book entitled Complex Terrains: Islam, Culture and Women in Asia (Routledge, March 2013) and co-edited several books including Infinite Variety: Women in Society and Literature (UPL, 1994) and Other Englishes: Essays on Commonwealth Writing (UPL, 1991).

She is a member of the editorial board of Journal of Inter-Asia Cultural Studies as well as a member of the Board of the Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Society.

Her current work is based on research and writing around the cultural history of women in Bangladesh.

    Dr. Azim taught two courses entitled Feminist Theories and a senior course entitled Post-colonial feminisms at Umea Centre for Gender Studies (UCGS) at the University of Umea, Sweden from the 2nd of September to the 23rd of September 2015.

    • On 25th March 2016, Professor Firdous Azim presented her paper titled Birangona or Muktijoddha: The Politics of Naming  in the plenary session titled “Traumas of Genocide and Mass Violence” at the three day International Conference on Genocide and Mass Violence: Theories, Traumas, Trials and Testimonies held from 24th March to 26th March 2016 at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban, University of Dhaka.
    • Professor Firdous Azim was one of the discussants at the launch of the book titled “University of Dhaka-Making, Unmaking, Remaking” edited by Imtiaz Ahmed and Iftekhar Iqbal and published by Prothoma, on 1st February 2016 at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban, University of Dhaka.
    • On 19th October 2015, Professor Firdous Azim presented her paper titled “English Language in the Globalised Market Place” in the session titled “‘Minding your language’ - English language skills in a globalised world”  at the symposium on Access Points & Progression Pathways – Routes to success in education, employment & skills  organized by the British Council, Bangladesh.

    •  Professor Azim delivered inaugural lecture for a five day workshop for journalists on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) on 23rd October 2015. The workshop was organized by REDOrange for their project “Image: Initiatives for Married Adolescent Girls’ Empowerment” that aims at informing Bangladesh’s married adolescent girls about their rights.

    • Dr. Azim gave a public lecture on “Feminism in Bangladesh” at Umea Centre for Gender Studies (UCGS) at the University of Umea, Sweden in September 2015.
