Architect Susannah C. Drake, Principal at Sasaki, delivered the 144th Angan Lecture titled 'Geophysical City' at BRAC University's School of Architecture and Design on January 29, 2023. The lecture centered on Drake's ambitious endeavor to create a "geographical city" that recognizes the impact of hydrologic and geographic systems on urbanity, particularly in the context of climate change.
Originating from New York, Drake's quest for an ideal city enhanced urban livability. Her lecture showcased geological and hydrological considerations in park design, advocating for the resurgence of historic streams and waterways to mitigate future catastrophic impacts. Despite initially discussing geological elements hidden beneath the ground, the lecture expanded to highlight community engagement, revealing interconnected systems underground. The projects discussed outlined the intricate relationship between geomorphology, urbanity, infrastructure, performance, and beauty.
Drake founded DLANDstudio Architecture + Landscape Architecture, earning recognition through various awards, before merging with Sasaki. In May 2022, DLANDstudio joined forces with Sasaki, creating a partnership that addresses 21st-century design challenges across 30 countries and 45 languages, with a commitment to gender diversity symbolizing women empowerment.
Drake's achievements include the AIA Young Architects Award, AIA and ASLA Fellowships, and acknowledgment as an Architectural League Emerging Voice. She specializes in complex projects, applying a synthesized, analytical, and research-based approach. Her leadership extends to board positions at institutions like the Van Alen Institute and the Regional Plan Association.
Susannah Drake's global influence is evident through lectures at prestigious institutions and her role as President of the board of the Clyfford Still Museum. She holds degrees from Dartmouth College and the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Drake has contributed significantly to climate adaptation and infrastructure, with her works and writings published in notable publications. Her upcoming book, "Gowanus Sponge Park," is set to be published by Park Books in 2023, showcasing her consistent innovation in urban ecological infrastructure.
The lecture was followed with a panel discussion with Q&A, featuring panelists Fuad H Mallick, Professor and Dean at BRAC University, and Zainab Faruqui Ali, Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Architecture at BRAC University. The event was hosted by Zainab Faruqui Ali (Chairperson, Department of Architecture, SoAD, BRAC University).
