An orientation program for first year undergraduate students of Fall 2022 semester was organized under the biotechnology program of the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at BRAC University’s Mohakhali campus on 3 December, 2022. A total of 150 students and life science faculty members participated in the program which aimed to welcome the new students and introduce them to university facilities, faculty members, the academic system and rules and regulations.
Dr. Munima Haque, Director of the biotechnology program, gave an overview of the department. Guest speakers Dr. Nadia Sultana Deen, Director of the microbiology program, and Dr. Mahbubul H. Siddiqee, Executive Member of Life Sciences, recommended students to develop their humane qualities. Alumni Dr. Md. Saifur Rahman Khan and Dr. Sreoshee Rafiq shared their experiences, challenges, future scopes and opportunities in the biotechnology industry.
Guest speaker Mohammad Uzzal Hossain, Divisional In-charge and Scientific Officer, Bioinformatics Division, National Institute of Biotechnology, shared his experiences and inspired the new students by encouraging to focus on research studies. Prof. Dr. Mahbubul Alam Majumdar, Dean of the School of Data and Sciences, gave insights from a Bangladeshi perspective.
Dr. AFM Yusuf Haider, Professor and Chairperson, Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, suggested students to utilize their academic life through hard work and perseverance. He inspired them saying, “We have gifted you a key ring without a key. Because you are the maker of the key of your own life.” The program ended with cultural performances by students.
