An orientation program for first year undergraduate students of Spring 2023 semester was organized under the biotechnology program of the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at BRAC University’s Mohakhali campus on 11 February, 2023. A total of 85 students and life science faculty members participated in the program which aimed to welcome the new students and introduce them to university facilities, faculty members, the academic system and rules and regulations.
Dr. Munima Haque, Director of the biotechnology program, inaugurated the opening session giving an overview of the program and Professor Dr. Mahbubul Alam Majumdar, Dean of the School of Data and Sciences, gave insights from a Bangladeshi perspective. A video was screened on BRAC University and the biotechnology program. Dr. AFM Yusuf Haider, Chairperson, Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences was also present.

Guest speaker Dr. Habibul Bari Shozib, Senior Scientific Officer, Grain Quality and Nutrition Division, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, shared his experiences and encouraged students to focus on research studies. Alumni Nazia Nowrid and Fahima Akter Mukta also shared experiences, challenges they faced and future scope and opportunities in the biotechnology industry.
Cultural performance by the students
Faculty member Dr. Aparna Islam suggested focusing on developing foundations and being creative and Dr. AFM Yusuf Haider, Professor and Chairperson of the department, suggested students utilize their academic life through perseverance and urged them to reach out whenever needed. The program ended with a lively cultural performance by students.
