Professor J R Choudhury, VC BU presented the keynote paper at the seminar on 'Earthquake and tsunami: Vulnerability of Bangladesh,' organized by National Oceanographic and Maritime Institute (NOAMI) at Atomic Energy Centre auditorium in the city on April 09, 2005. The Director of NOAMI Professor A A Ziauddin Ahmad presided over the seminar.The speakers said, Dhaka is one of the 20 earthquake-prone cities of the world and will experience deaths of 3 lakh people if an earthquake rocks it at midnight at 8 Richter scale. In the event of an earthquake of such a magnitude 42 per cent of its buildings will crumble to pieces. In the event of quake measuring 9 on the Richter scale, 63 per cent of the buildings of the city will be destroyed. The seminar predicted that Shakharibazar area in the old city would suffer greater destruction than other areas of the city. Professor Monirul Haque, member of University Grant Commission (UGC), Professor Aftab Alam Khan, Dhaka University, Mir Fazlul Karim, Director, Biological Survey Department, Mehedi Ahmed Ansari, Assistant Professor BUET and Dr. ASM Maksud Karim, Assistant Professor, Dhaka University addressed the seminar.
