The workshop held on June 10th, 2023, at the School of Architecture and Design, BRAC University in Dhaka, Bangladesh, focused on New Contextualism, an architectural philosophy coined by Mohammad Habib Reza that emphasizes the importance of broader context in design. Over the course of a decade, this philosophy took shape at Brac University and underwent refinement and growth, evolving into a more comprehensive approach that embraces inclusivity and integrates concepts from diverse fields of study. The workshop was divided into a lecture series and a hands-on exercise.
During the lecture series, academics and architects who have contributed to the developmentof New Contextualism presented their insights and experiences. They discussed the limitations of Modernism and Postmodernism and how New Contextualism addresses those limitations by considering the intricacies and diversity of the present-day world. The speakers highlighted the philosophy's focus on creating designs that are both timeless and responsive to future demands.
Topics covered during the lecture series included the historical development of New Contextualism, its theoretical framework, case studies of successful projects, and the interdisciplinary nature of the philosophy. The aim was to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the philosophy and its practical applications in architecture and urban design.
After the lecture series, the workshop participants engaged in a hands-on exercise. This exercise involved applying the principles of New Contextualism to a specific design challenge or site. Participants were encouraged to consider the context's historic, cultural, social, environmental and other aspects while
developing their designs. They worked in groups, collaborating and exchanging ideas to take innovative and contextually responsive design decisions.
The workshop aimed to provide a platform for students, professionals, and enthusiasts to learn, discuss, and practice New Contextualism as an approach to architecture and urban design. By combining theoretical knowledge with practical application, the workshop fostered a deeper understanding of the philosophy and its potential impact on the built environment. The following topics were covered through lectures in the day-long event:
LECTURE 1: INTRODUCTION TO NEW CONTEXTUALISM AND ITS PRINCIPLES
This session presented the concept of "New Contextualism" as a potential solution to the limitations faced by contemporary architectural practices. New Contextualism endeavours to strike a balance between universal and specific design elements, establishing a foundation for architecture within its context while simultaneously transcending it to appeal to a wider audience. The session delved into the definition and exploration of the principles underlying New Contextualism, which encompass forward-looking design informed by accurate predictions of the future, a profound understanding of historical trends, recognition of the diverse and extensive nature of context, and a focus on equity and justice through inclusive and diverse designs. It is believed that by emBRACing these principles, designers can create built environments that possess meaning, inclusivity, and adaptability to meet evolving needs and desires, effectively addressing the challenges of the 21st century and contributing to a better world for future generations.

Kaikobad's research focuses on the contextual design and functional adaptability in the evolving built environment, informal urbanism, social inclusion for spatial justice, the relationship between urban built form and community, the impact of anthropogenic hazards on heritage buildings, and cultural programming of memory spaces. Kaikobad has actively participated and published in national and international conferences. Through his various design and research endeavours, he envisions a society that is equitable and fosters sharing.
LECTURE 3: CASE STUDIES OF SUCCESSFUL NEW CONTEXTUAL PROJECTS: IN STUDIOS AND BEYOND
By drawing upon real-life instances, this presentation explored an examination of case studies that exemplify successful projects following the principles of New Contextualism. These examples were thoroughly analysed to discern how context was interpreted, seamlessly incorporated, and ultimately translated into design solutions. Through the study of these projects, attendees acquired practical knowledge and valuable insights that can be applied to their work, enabling them to effectively implement the principles of New Contextualism.
